Woodford is an extremely attractive residential area situated to the northeast of London, about 8 miles from the city. Part of the London Borough of Redbridge, Woodford comprises Woodford Green, Woodford Bridge, Woodford Wells and South Woodford. Almost a third of it lies within designated greenbelt land; there are 13 conservation areas, 1200 acres of forest and 600 acres of green spaces and parks. Much of the housing in the district was built between the two world wars and the area retains a feel of a gentler age, an era of tree lined avenues, cricket on the green and ducks in the village pond. Sir Winston Churchill, Britain's wartime leader and 'greatest Englishman' was a Member of Parliament for Wanstead and Woodford for 40 years. A bronze statue commemorating him stands on Woodford Green close to Hurst House, a beautiful private home constructed in 1714. There are many other grand historic houses in the area, several of them now converted into some of the finest private schools in the country. Fortunate residents of this highly sought after location can enjoy charming parks, historic buildings, forestland, lakes, riding, fishing, golf, tennis and cricket clubs, yet remain within 25 minutes of the centre of London. |
